Why you should build a more inclusive and accessible business, and how to do it

By
Want to know why you should build a more inclusive and accessible business - and how to do it?

Firstly, you need to develop positive environments - both online and offline.

Places where everyone can engage and contribute - either in the workplace or as a community.

To do this, you need to exceed merely meeting your mandatory and statutory Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) obligations (important though these are).

Showing your employees, volunteers, stakeholders, clients and customers that you are serious about DE&I, and setting and reaching goals and targets, is a strategic business decision. One that makes good business sense.

Research by Kantar from 2023 showed that “over half of UK consumers (53%) said a brand’s diversity and inclusion efforts influence their purchase decisions.”

Secondly, you need to make sure that you are accessible.

Accessibility for all is a vital pillar of inclusion.

By making your brand, business or organisation accessible to people with visual impairments, disabilities and other accessibility needs, not only are you supporting and encouraging inclusion but also ultimately increasing revenue and improving your bottom line.

Not doing so could be costing you dearly.

According to We are Purple:

“The economy is losing money every month due to inaccessibility... Banks/building societies lose £935 million, supermarkets lose £501 million, and high street shops lose £267 million.”

Your business or organisation could be losing money too, without even realising it.

In reality, people simply don’t complain about poor accessibility or won’t make you aware of it - they just go elsewhere or give up altogether.

The percentage of people who abandon a problematic website is as high as 69%, according to The Click Away Pound Report.

The same report said that only 8% of users with access needs contacted the website owner about barriers they experienced.

So, you potentially have a big and costly problem.

Awareness of the problem is the first step in solving the problem.
