On Saturday 30th June 2018, Bolton-based Training Provider, Alliance Learning opened its gates to the Horwich Heritage Society.
As part of its tour of the former Loco Works, Horwich Heritage used the Alliance Learning grounds (former Loco Works Training School) to host a visit for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Society. This was part of a daylong event which included over 40 guests.
The day consisted of a tour around Horwich to view the surviving artefacts associated with the old Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, including the former Station (now Station Park). The tour then concluded with a visit to the former Horwich Locomotive Works in which Alliance Learning’s Head Office is situated.
Horwich Heritage and Alliance Learning then held a joint unveiling of the Inscription Stone from the former Railway Mechanics Institute which has recently been renovated by Roy Davies on behalf of the Heritage Society. The Chairman of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Society, Graham Smith, and Stuart Whittle, Chairman of Horwich Heritage, spoke about the significance of the stone, which commemorates the gift of the building extensions by Samuel Fielden, a Director of the L&YR in 1893, as it is the only remaining part of the RMI to have survived.
Andrew Waldron of Horwich Heritage had the following comments: “ On behalf of Horwich Heritage, I would like thank the team at Alliance Learning for looking after this stone and for allowing the restoration of this important piece of Horwich’ railway history to take place.”
Chloe Ramsden, Marketing Manager at Alliance Learning went on to say; “We are grateful that Horwich Heritage have restored the memorial stone on our site, it was fantastic to be part of the unveiling for this big part of Horwich history.”
Kelly Perkin, Acting Chief Executive added, ‘Alliance Learning were delighted to support such a great project and we will continue to proudly display this remaining artefact of old Horwich. The work the team have done to restore the stonework is amazing and we will be proud to display this piece of history for many years to come.’
