Meet Tom - Supported Living

By
Tom’s Supported Living story is one of laughter, music and support.

Tom has lived in supported living for many years, but his journey has not always been easy. In recent years, changes to his eyesight have brought new challenges, yet with the right support around him, Tom continues to find joy, connection and purpose in everyday life.

A new chapter with the right support

Before moving into supported living 21 years ago, Tom attended residential college.

When his eyesight began to deteriorate following a diagnosis affecting his vision in 2022, life became more difficult and uncertain.

“Sometimes things feel harder.” Tom explains. “But we try our best to get through it.”

Having a consistent support network around him has made a significant difference. Tom values knowing that help is always there when he needs it, while still being able to enjoy independence in a safe and friendly home.

“I like the independence,” he says. “And it feels good knowing there’s always someone there to support you.”

Staff describe how Tom has grown in confidence over time. When he first moved to his current home, he often kept to himself, but today he is far more connected to those around him.

“He keeps his door open now,” explains his support worker Jane. “He chats with staff, plays music and is much more involved in daily life.”

Tom brings humour into everyday life

One thing everyone agrees on is Tom’s sense of humour. Known for his quick one-liners, he regularly brings laughter to staff, housemates and even strangers.

“If Tom goes to the barber, a café or a shop, he’ll have everyone laughing,” Jane says. “His jokes just come out of nowhere.”

Tom enjoys comedy shows and has seen several comedians live, including Jason Manford and Lee Mack. Humour plays an important role in his wellbeing, helping lift difficult days and strengthening relationships around him.

“There are lots of laughs here,” says Tom. “The good moments definitely outweigh the bad,”

Tom uses music for comfort and creativity

Music is a huge part of Tom’s life and an important way for him to relax and manage his emotions.

“It calms me when I’m feeling stressed,” he explains.

With support from staff, Tom plays keyboard regularly and shares his love of music with others. He has even entertained people at Christmas celebrations, running quizzes and musical games for fellow residents and staff.

Tom’s musical tastes are wide-ranging – from Fleetwood Mac and Bruce Springsteen to The Eagles – and music sessions become shared moments of connection in the home.

Tom stays active and involved in activities

Although vision loss has changed some of the activities Tom can do independently, supported living helps him stay involved in daily routines and hobbies.

Staff support him with shopping, cooking preparation and household tasks, ensuring he remains included and active. He also enjoys quizzes, radio challenges, walks outdoors and spending time with housemates.

“We adapt things so Tom can still take part,” Jane explains. “It’s about making sure he’s included in everything.”

Tom especially enjoys quizzes, a lifelong interest inspired by family traditions. He loves testing his knowledge each morning with staff.

Tom is staying positive and looking ahead

Tom is currently exploring assistive technology, such as a talking laptop, so he can continue one of his passions, writing stories inspired by his imagination and dreams.

With encouragement from staff, he is focussed on finding new ways to pursue his interests and maintain independence despite his changing circumstances.

Each day brings its own challenges, but Tom approaches life with honesty, humour and resilience.

Tom’s advice to others when asked what he would say to someone considering supported living was simple:

“Try it you will look back in years to come and say why did I wait so long.”
