Meet Gemma - Supported Living

By
Gemma lives in supported living in Lancashire and enjoys a busy, social life filled with music, friendships and growing independence. For her, support living means having the right support while still being able to live life her way.

“I like living here,” Gemma says with a smile. “I like my friends and I can do things a bit more.”

After moving into supported living, Gemma found it easier to access activities, get out into the community and build a routine that works for her.

Living life more independently

A big part of supported living for Gemma is independence. With support from staff when needed, she feels confident doing many things of her own.

“I go out by myself,” she explains proudly. “I go to the hairdressers by myself,”

Gemma also helps with everyday tasks at home, including shopping and cooking.

“I like making spaghetti Bolognese,” she says. “That’s my best dish – with garlic bread!”

The staff are there to provide reassurance and practical help when needed, whether that’s attending appointments or supporting her with personal care.

“They help me with washing my hair and take me to appointments,” Gemma explains. “Someone’s always here to look out for me.”

The balance of independence and support helps Gemma feel safe while continuing to develop her confidence.

A busy week full of activities

Gemma enjoys a full weekly routine, especially activities that involve music and socialising.

“I go to music every Monday morning,” she says. “Everybody sings and socialises – I like singing Tina Turner!”

Music plays a big role in her life and she loves dancing and performing for others. She also attends Church music sessions during the weeks and enjoys spending time with friends in the community.

Fridays are a particular highlight. “I go for lunch on Friday and then music in the afternoon,” she says. “I like chicken in a basket or popcorn chicken!”

Having regular activities gives Gemma structure, purpose and something to look forward to each week.

Working and being part of the community

Supported living has also helped Gemma take part in meaningful activities outside the home. Every Thursday, she attends the local club where she helps out.

“I wipe the tables and hoover up,” she explains. “I have my brew before I start work.”

The role allows her to meet people, build friendships and feel part of her local community.

“I talk to people there – lots of friends,” she says.

Holidays, Fun and New Experiences

Gemma loves travelling and has enjoyed several holidays with support.

“I’ve been to Tenerife, Lanzarote, Benidorm and on a cruise,” she says. “I like dancing in the pool.”

She has also visited Disneyland Paris and hopes to travel again in the future. These experiences help build confidence and create lasting memories.

What supported living means to Gemma

When asked how supported living has changed her life, Gemma’s answer is simple, but powerful.

“I feel good. Happy. Confident.”

For Gemma, supported living means having support when she needs it while continuing to grow in independence, enjoy friendships and take part in the things she loves most.

Her advice to anyone thinking about support living?

“It’s a good idea.”
