Meet Matthew - The FX Learning Disability Service

By
For Tracey and Ian, finding the right support for Matthew as he moved into adulthood was one of the most important decisions for their family. Today, FX plays a central role in Matthew’s life, providing structure, meaningful activities, and a place where he feels comfortable, understood, and happy.

About Matthew

Matthew is 21 and lives at home with his family. He has a severe learning disability, is autistic, and is non-verbal, communicating through pointing and PECS cards while at FX.

Despite these challenges, Tracey and Ian describe him as “very easy going most of the time.” Tracey explains, “He’s quite chilled at home. As long as he’s got his iPad, he’s as happy as Larry.”

Occasionally, Matthew experiences frustration when he struggles to communicate, which can lead to meltdowns. Loud environments can also be difficult. “He doesn’t like shouting near him, even if it’s not directed at him, he’ll let you know,” Ian adds.

Matthew loves music, technology, trains, buses, and outings with his family. Sundays are often spent exploring together, watching transport, or enjoying favourite foods. “He’s very food-orientated,” Tracey says. “He likes what he likes and he sticks to it.”

Finding the right support

As Matthew approached adulthood, Tracey and Ian wanted something different from a traditional college setting. “I sort of knew what I wanted for him,” Tracey explains. “I didn’t want the college route; I knew that wouldn’t have been right for Matthew.”

After visiting several services, FX immediately stood out. Tracey recalls, “When we went to look around, it just felt completely different. It was just right for him.” Matthew began with short visits before fully transitioning from school, and Ian says, “He just settled straight away.”

FX in action

Matthew attends FX five days a week, following a structured routine that is especially important for him. Tracey explains, “He gets up, goes to FX, does activities, has lunch, has a snack, and comes home. That structure really works for him.”

He enjoys music sessions, yoga, and sound baths, and staff are impressed with how engaged he is. “One of the instructors said she was really impressed with how well he took part,” Tracey adds.

Community outings, such as bowling, cinema trips and trampoline sessions, are also highlights. Ian notes, “There’s always something going on. They’re never just sitting around doing the same thing.”

The move to the building at Atholl Street has improved Matthew’s experience further, with separate activity spaces allowing calmer and more varied sessions.

Building independence and confidence

Matthew has grown more independent and confident. Each morning, Tracey drops him off and he heads inside on his own. “He gives me a little wave and goes straight to his room, gets his bag sorted – he knows exactly what he’s doing,” she says.

A significant milestone was Matthew beginning to travel home using FX transport. “Letting him come home in transport was a big step for me,” Tracey explains. “It’s been the right thing to do. He knows the driver, they play music he likes, and he’s really comfortable.”

Impact on the family

Tracey and Ian
For Tracey and Ian, FX has made a meaningful difference not only to Matthew’s wellbeing but to family life as a whole. “The biggest thing is knowing he’s happy and looked after brilliantly,” Tracey says. “I don’t worry when he’s there.”

The consistent routine throughout the year has reduced stress for the family. “That six-week summer holiday used to throw everything out,” Tracey explains. “Now there’s continuity and that helps all of us.”

Advice to other parents

Tracey and Ian encourage families considering FX to visit and see the environment for themselves. “Just go and have a look,” Tracey says. “Talk to the staff and see the environment. We got a really good feeling straight away and I’m sure other parents will too.”

Looking ahead

For Matthew, FX provides more than a daily programme – it offers structure, stimulation and a place where he can participate in activities suited to his needs and interests. For his family, it brings reassurance, support and confidence about the future. As Tracey puts it, “We know he’s happy and that means everything.”
