What is the difference between a landscape architect and a landscape designer?

By

This is a question that Hilary gets asked frequently. See below for Hilary’s answers:

First of all, anyone can call themselves a landscape architect or a landscape designer. Ideally, you should look for someone who is a chartered member of the Landscape Institute (CMLI).

The distinction between a chartered landscape architect and a landscape designer lies in their level of education, professional requirements, and scope of work.

?Education and Professional Requirements:

Chartered Landscape Architects: They typically hold a bachelor's or master's degree in landscape architecture and are chartered members of the Landscape Institute. They undergo rigorous education and training to understand the technical, environmental, and legal aspects of designing landscapes.

Landscape Designers: They may have formal education in landscape design, horticulture, or related fields, but it is not always required.

?Scope of Work:

Chartered Landscape Architects: They are involved in the planning, design, and implementation of outdoor spaces, often working on large-scale projects. They consider various factors like site analysis, environmental sustainability, drainage, and construction techniques. They may also work on large scale landscape character assessments, landscape and visual impact assessments (LVIAs) and public spaces, parks, or urban planning projects.

Landscape Designers: They primarily focus on the aesthetic and functional aspects of smaller-scale residential or commercial projects. They work closely with clients to create visually appealing outdoor spaces, selecting plants, materials, and creating plans for planting, hardscaping, and lighting.

In summary, chartered landscape architects have a broader range of work, more extensive education, and often work on larger and more complex projects. Landscape designers typically concentrate on smaller projects and emphasise the visual and functional aspects of the design. Always ask about qualifications, experience and insurance.
