The miracle of birth

The invisible services enabling the delivery of everyday miracles

Giving birth. A medical procedure or a natural bodily function? A precious miracle or a terrifying ordeal? Often, it’s all of the above.

In the UK, most births take place in a hospital environment. Fortunately, the design of birthing suites has moved on in recent years, aiming to create spaces that feel less medical, that reduce stress (and therefore the need for medical inventions), and make giving birth a more normal, natural, positive experience.

A great birthing suite looks and feels relaxing, with all the medical functions that the healthcare professionals needs, and gives the patient a feeling of control over her surroundings. It’s all about the building services.

Combining the feel of a hotel room with the functionality of a hospital room into one relaxing, sterile space that needs to accommodate a lot of moving people can be a challenge. A bed, a pool, a private bathroom, natural lighting and surgical capacity all in one space? You got it.

It’s in environments like this that we really get to flex our engineering muscles.

Find out how we helped Tameside Hospital create three fresh, new maternity-led birthing suites.
