From a spark to a flame

Fire risk management begins at the design stage

According to government figures, 40% of fires in 2019 were caused by an electrical appliance or system, and 15,000 of last year’s fire events (just over half) were in commercial buildings.

A fire can be devastating for a business – the costs of human, structural, information and emotional harm are high, whatever your insurance or liability.

How can you be sure that your business won’t suffer?

Prevention is better than cure.

Having up to date, well-maintained electrical systems is essential for a safe workplace, whether that’s an office, leisure venue or industrial facility. Make sure that your systems and appliances are checked at least once a year. And give your safety officer the authority to fix problems quickly and to challenge bad behaviour.

Human error is a key factor. The safest systems and appliances in the world can go wrong when used badly – electricity is dangerous. Ensure that everyone using a piece of equipment knows how to do so properly, from the printer or the air conditioning unit to industrial tools and vehicles. Training needs to be repeated!

A good quality mechanical and electrical engineer will have designed safety and maintenance into your systems, ensuring appropriate airflows and access for repairs.

Prepare for the worst

As employers and landlords, we have a responsibility to the people in our care to ensure that our premises are safe. And also to be confident that, should a fire occur, it can be managed.

Fire detection systems, emergency lighting, fire doors and well-rehearsed evacuation processes all have a role to play.

But when the chips are down, it’s up to your safety officer to ensure that the safety plan is up to date and everything is as it should be.
