Four ChatGPT Settings You Should Check Today

By
Everyone is using AI… and when I say ‘AI’, I mean things like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Claude or Perplexity.  These are just one kiond of AI tool (they’re known as GPTs and use Large Language Models (LLMs) to predict the best outcome from a question.

But if you use these tools, then there's something I think you should do today; Check your privacy settings.

Now, before anyone panics, let me be clear... I'm not saying you should stop using AI.

I use AI every day. It's an incredible tool that helps me research, write, brainstorm and solve problems faster.

But, as with any technology, it's worth understanding how it works and what information you're sharing.

After all, I often say that GDPR simply means Giving Data Proper Respect. That doesn't just apply to the information you collect about your customers. It also applies to the information you're willingly typing into AI tools.

If you're a ChatGPT user, here are four settings I'd recommend checking.

1. Decide whether your conversations should improve ChatGPT
  • Open ChatGPT and go to Settings > Data Controls.
  • You'll find an option called "Improve the model for everyone."
  • If this is switched on, your chats, prompts and attachments may be used to help improve OpenAI's models.
  • If you'd rather they weren't, simply switch it off.

2. Clear your chat history
While you're in Data Controls, you'll also find the option to Delete all chats.
It's worth reviewing your conversation history from time to time and removing anything you no longer need.

3. Review what ChatGPT remembers about you
  • Next, go to Settings > Personalization > Memory > Manage Memories.
  • You might be surprised by what ChatGPT has remembered.
  • Some of it may be genuinely useful. Some of it may no longer be relevant.
  • Take a few moments to review it and delete anything you don't want stored.

4. Use Temporary Chat for sensitive conversations
Sometimes you want to ask a question without it becoming part of your chat history.
That's where Temporary Chat comes in.
Select the temporary chat option before you begin your conversation, and ChatGPT won't use memory for that session or save it in your chat history.

Giving Data Proper Respect
AI isn't something to fear. It's something to understand.
The more we rely on these tools, the more important it becomes to use them intentionally.

A couple of minutes checking your settings today could help you make better decisions about the information you share tomorrow.

That's not about mistrusting AI. It's simply about Giving Data Proper Respect.
