The Planting Design Handbook
By Nick Robinson

Published in June 1992 (1st edition)

Since its first edition in 1992, Nick Robinson's The Planting Design Handbook has been widely acknowledged as a seminal text for landscape architecture courses worldwide. It remains one of the few works written by a practising landscape architect and educator, who is also a knowledgeable horticulturalist and skilled plantsman, with a focus on large-scale planting design in landscape architecture and urban design projects.

The book is renowned for its elegant integration of ecological principles with a deep understanding of visual and spatial composition. It emphasises the role of vegetation layers and designed plant communities in creating diverse, complex plant assemblages across a range of sites and uses.

It also considers recent advancements in both theory and practice, particularly the use of perennials, and incorporates a variety of current media and approaches relevant to landscape architecture and design today.

The book is beautifully illustrated, including a colour section, and features the intricately detailed line drawings of Chinese architect and painter Jia-Hua Wu.
