Learning Disabilities Week: “Do you see me? Yes, We Do.” Caritas Care highlights the importance of visibility, independence and opportunity

By
At Caritas Care, Learning Disabilities Week is being marked with a renewed focus on recognising individuality, promoting independence and ensuring people with learning disabilities and autism are truly seen, heard and valued.

This year’s national theme, “Do you see me?”, encourages reflection on how society supports and includes people with learning disabilities and whether enough is being done to recognise their strengths, abilities and aspirations.

Across its supported living and day services, Caritas Care continues to champion a person-centred approach that empowers individuals to live fulfilling lives, build confidence and take meaningful steps towards independence at their own pace.

Laura King, Supported Living Manager at Caritas Care, said “Independence looks different for everyone. Our role is to support people to build confidence in their own skills, make choices about their lives, and feel genuinely valued for who they are. When we take the time to really see the person, we see so much more than a diagnosis - we see personality, humour, creativity, and strength.”

Martin Heneghan, Learning Disabilities Day Service Manager, added “Learning Disabilities Week is about visibility and voice. Every person we support has their own unique interests, abilities and goals, and our job is to create the right environment for those to flourish. It’s about listening, adapting, and making sure people have real opportunities to thrive in ways that matter to them.”

The charity emphasises that meaningful inclusion goes beyond awareness campaigns and must be embedded in everyday practice, from supporting life skills and community participation to encouraging creativity, self-expression and decision-making.

Throughout Learning Disabilities Week, Caritas Care is celebrating the achievements of the people it supports and reaffirming its commitment to seeing the person, not the label.
Phil East, Caritas Care CEO added “This week is a reminder that inclusion is not just about visibility, but about action. When we truly see people, we recognise their potential, respect their choices, and create opportunities for them to thrive.”
