Have your staff been trained in Fire Safety?

By
Fire safety was covered by approximately seventy pieces of fire safety legislation in the United Kingdom. The main pieces of legislation included the Fire Precautions Act 1961 and the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997/1999.

In 2001 it was decided the legislation needed to be to simplified and was achieved a few years later in England and Wales with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

This is a huge piece of legislation and a great sleep aid for insomniacs but for the purposes of this we are looking at training.

Two different kinds of training became a Statutory requirement.

1) The Role and Responsibilities of a Fire Marshall. Looking at why we need Fire Marshalls and what they do in the event of a fire or other emergency evacuation.

This is primarily a theory based course (fairly short so not death by PowerPoint) but can also include a walk round to apply what you have just covered to your workplace.

2) The Different Types of Extinguishers and their use,

This will usually include a video describing the different classifications of extinguishers and the kinds of fire each one should be used on.

Some, but not all, companies will then have a practical session where staff will have the opportunity of using a fire extinguisher on a small, controlled fire under the supervision of a qualified trainer. Most if not all employees should undertake this and renew it at regular intervals-usually three years.

FR Fire can carry out all your training at your place of work and, as long as you have an enclosed, private space, an extinguisher course will include a live fire session. For groups of up to 10.
