New Adopter Guide Shines a Light on Adoption Journeys from Diverse Backgrounds

By
At Caritas Care, we believe every child deserves a loving, stable, and permanent home no matter their ethnicity or background. That’s why we’re proud to be part of a new, heartfelt initiative created by 21 voluntary adoption agencies (VAAs) across the UK, aimed at helping more children of Black, Asian and other diverse ethnicities find the families they need and deserve.

Right now, children from these backgrounds wait longer than others to be adopted, sometimes nearly a year, we want to help change that.

The guide contains real stories and quotes from real people. Together, we’ve created a warm and honest guide for people who are considering adoption. It’s especially designed to support those from diverse communities who might be thinking about growing their family through adoption  and it features the voices of people who have already walked that path.

We’re especially delighted that the guide includes the story of Elmina, one of our amazing adopters here at Caritas Care. Her experience full of love, truth and inspiration runs throughout the guide, offering encouragement and insight to anyone wondering if adoption is right for them.

There are lots of myths out there about who can adopt. But at Caritas Care, we know that what truly matters is your ability to offer a loving and secure home. Your job title, salary, or the size of your house doesn’t define your potential to be a wonderful parent.

Kate Knowles, our Head of Children’s Services says, “Statistics show that children of Black, Asian and other diverse ethnicities are overrepresented in the care system and wait longer for an adoptive family. We want to help change that. We’re proud to be part of this guide, which shares heartfelt, first-hand experiences from adopters who’ve already taken that step. We hope it inspires and empowers others to explore the joy and fulfilment that adoption can bring.”

Adoption is a deeply personal journey, and for people from ethnically diverse backgrounds, it may come with unique questions, feelings and reflections. This guide doesn’t shy away from those instead, it offers reassurance, honesty, and support from people who’ve lived it.

Satwinder Sandhu, Chief Executive of the Consortium of Voluntary Adoption Agencies (CVAA), explains, “This guide amplifies the voices of adopters from diverse backgrounds. It’s about celebrating heritage, culture and identity, and ensuring no child waits longer than they should for a family that truly sees and supports them.”

As a voluntary adoption agency, we offer lifelong support to every family we work with, from first enquiry through to the years ahead. You’ll never be alone in your journey. We’re here to help you feel informed, confident and supported, every step of the way.
