Foster Carer George says fostering with Caritas Care has a real ‘family feel’ to it.
George Barker is encouraging others to think about fostering, explaining how the decision has changed his and his family’s life for the better.
George and his wife Ann-Marie decided to become foster carers after their two daughters left home for university and work.
He said: “Once our girls left for university, we missed having kids around. After a good chat about it we realised we’re in a position where we can afford the time for these children, so we decided to go for it.”
George and his family joined Caritas Care after fostering via another agency. After meeting with one of Caritas Care’s social workers Steph, George made the decision to move to the charity.
Talking about his first initial meeting George said: “We sat and talked for hours. They are so passionate about Caritas Care and the work they are doing. We weren’t getting that kind of support from our previous agency. At Caritas Care staff are at the end of the phone if we need anything.”
Over the years George and his family have fostered numerous children for both short-term and long-term placements. In October they welcomed a young girl into their home.
He said: “Seeing her blossom and become more confident makes it all worthwhile. She asked if she can stay with us forever. She’s part of our life and part of our family now and we wouldn’t have it any other way.”
George has spoken about the social benefits that surprised him after joining Caritas Care.
He said: “There are numerous get togethers at Christmas and throughout the year. We’ve built up a great relationship, and not just with Caritas Care but with other foster carers as well. Everybody works together which has a really nice family feel to it.”
