Tell us about your journey leading up to the moment you joined GLD.
Before joining GLD I lived in Portugal and had a very similar role to what I do now. I would say you could split my roles into two sections: consultancy within the office and consultancy on site. All of my roles have been within the building services across education, health care and commercial property to name a few.
Since joining the team, what have you been doing?
I joined the GLD team in July 2020 as an electrical engineer. Since joining I have done a wide range of electrical design work. I mainly focus on the calculations and work a lot with emergency lighting. I have also visited a few sites which I have thoroughly enjoyed and have completed a combination of both mechanical and electrical work.
Talk to use about your favourite projects.
One of my first tasks as an electrical engineer was to work on a hotel in Portugal. The projects were for both a refurbishment and a new build so there was a lot to be done! For this project I designed the lighting, small power and security systems. At GLD my first project was working on the White House Club, where I completed the electrical calculations and designed the emergency lighting. I was involved in mechanical and electrical aspects of this project.
Before GLD, I would have to say my favourite project was working on the prison in Exeter. I designed almost all of the emergency lighting and the electrical support systems. I also designed the smoke extraction and power supplies. I enjoyed this project as I had the opportunity to work with a different kind of calculation and had the opportunity to use some new technology.
What’s it like to work here?
I really enjoy working at GLD mainly because of the people that I work with. We are a small, friendly team that can work together very well. I enjoy the electrical calculations that I do, and I always look forward to going on the site visits.
Rui leaves us with the hopes to “expand my knowledge of electrical design and improve on my ability to work with mechanical designs”.
