A joint initiative launched by Lake District Produce Champions A Day's Walk and the Holker Estate to make sustainably-managed wild Lake District venison available to Cumbrians, is proving popular with both visitors and locals keen to reduce their carbon footprint, eat healthily and know where their food comes from.
Under the scheme Holker Estate's gamekeeper Sam Thompson, who is responsible for sustainably managing the wild deer population on the Estate's 17,000 acres, supplies A Day's Walk with prime venison cuts as well as burgers and sausages made onsite. This allows for full traceability whilst offering a super-lean red meat alternative to traditional cuts.
Colin Sneath, A Day's Walk's founder, is delighted with the response to the initiative. "For us it's about as good as it gets in terms of sustainability and traceability, which is what local produce should be all about. Our Venison Counter at the Holker Lake District Food Hall is now a match for any in the Country and our online delivery customers all over Cumbria are embracing the benefits of this wonderful, sustainable, local food source."
A Day's Walk has made its full range of Holker Estate venison produce available via home delivery to the whole of Cumbria via its online shop www.adayswalk.co.uk.
