Why 'Stock Photo' Marketing is Failing Local Businesses in 2026

By
We have an incredible business community here in the North West. When I attend networking events or browse the members here on GB Shared, I am constantly blown away by the innovation, expertise, and passion in our region.

But often, when I get back to my desk and look up those same brilliant businesses on LinkedIn or their websites, I feel a sudden disconnect.

In person, you are dynamic, local experts. Online, you look like a generic corporate entity from a stock image library.

The "Anywhere" Problem In 2026, the biggest risk to local professional services isn't a lack of skill; it's a lack of identity.

We talk a lot about keeping business local and sustainable supply chains. Yet, so many businesses are still relying on American-style stock imagery to sell Lancashire-based expertise.

When you use generic visuals, you create an "Anywhere Brand." You could be in Manchester, Madrid, or Miami. It strips away the very thing that makes you valuable to your clients: your roots, your team, and your reality.

The Digital Handshake

I call your profile photo and banner your "Digital Handshake."

If I meet you at a frantic networking event, you are warm and engaging. If I then go to your profile and see a stiff, 10-year-old headshot (or a grey avatar), the trust we built instantly evaporates.

Psychology tells us we judge trustworthiness in under a second. If your digital presence feels "fake" or outdated, clients subconsciously assume your services might be too.

Are you guilty of the 'Catfish'?
As we start the new year, I am challenging my network to do a quick "Visual Reality Check."

Instead of a long audit, just ask yourself one question: If a dream client looked at my profile right now, would they recognize the person they are going to meet on Zoom?

  • If your photo is from 2015...
  • If your banner shows a service you stopped offering...
  • If your website is full of models who don't work for you...

...then you are inadvertently making it harder for people to trust you.

Let’s Show Up in 2026

The businesses that will win this year are the ones brave enough to be real. Authenticity is the ultimate sustainable marketing strategy because no one can copy it.

Let’s stop hiding behind the stock photos. Let’s make sure the incredible talent in our region looks as good online as it does in person.

Need a second opinion?
I am offering a "virtual brew" to members of this network. If you want an honest pair of eyes on your current profile to see if it matches your expertise, drop me a message here.

Let’s get you visible.
