McDevitt Electrical & Controls are passionate and dedicated to upskilling the youth. We are committed to giving young people the option to learn from professionals and mentors in the workplace whilst gaining important education from providers.
McDevitt recently welcomed our newest apprentice, Roman, to the team. Roman joins Travis, Locci, Declan and Zack, making him our fifth electrical apprentice. Our apprentices are currently studying the Electrician Installation and Electrical Maintenance (Electrotechnical) apprenticeship standard with skilled providers. This route ensures well-rounded development for our apprentices. The classroom learning is directly applicable to the projects they are assigned.
The apprenticeships give the option to acquire and develop a range of skills in the workplace. The apprentices focus on many practices, like technical, practical and planning but also have many ways to self-develop.
We work with local providers to ensure our apprentices have access to the best education available. One of the institutions we work with is Themis at Burnley College who says
“Burnley College has built a fantastic working relationship with McDevitt Electrical and Controls for over six years. The Apprenticeships Team works effectively with Jayne. The communication between both organisations is productive, supportive and timely.
McDevitt’s and their apprentices understand their responsibilities and work well together to enhance and support the apprentice’s learning experience.
The apprentices carry out theoretical and practical training and assessments on a wide range of electrical topics such as inspection and testing, connections and terminations, planning and overseeing work and fault finding.”
McDevitt Electrical Controls & Director, Sam Hodson, is a mentor for our apprentices. Sam coordinates the apprentices and ensures the learning is on track with the projects they work on. Jayne Hodson helps our apprentices in the workplace with any queries and corresponds with the college providers. The team effort ensures the apprenticeships align for the benefit of our apprentices, and the interests of providers and McDevitt.
Sam says
“Apprentices have always been an integral part of our staffing team.
There are so many benefits for all when it comes to recruiting apprentices. An added advantage is ensuring the effective training of our new employees. We teach them to think and act in the interests of the business from day one. It’s great to do this and it means that they haven’t picked up any bad practices from anyone else. We are proud to be investing in the workforce and we are dedicated to upskilling the youth.”
