There's No Such Thing as a 'Normal' Family: National Adoption Week Highlights the Beauty of Diverse Adoption Journeys
As National Adoption Week (21-27 October) kicks off, a recent survey by You Can Adopt reveals a heartwarming truth: there’s no such thing as a ‘normal’ family. In North West England, 66% of people agree that family comes in many shapes and sizes, reinforcing that "the journey to a family is not always a traditional one."
At Caritas Care, we’re proud to support National Adoption Week’s mission to raise awareness about modern adoption and the unique stories that define it. The survey shows that 50% of respondents consider themselves to have a 'chosen family,' and 52% come from non-traditional family structures, such as blended, extended, or single-parent families. These findings highlight a growing acceptance of the many ways families are formed.

Why Family Diversity Matters
The survey also revealed that 88% of the public believes it’s essential to teach children that families come in all forms, promoting inclusivity and understanding. However, over half of the people surveyed weren’t exposed to this idea growing up, showing how societal views on family have evolved over time.

Caritas Care, alongside You Can Adopt, is helping to break down barriers by showing that families—whether adoptive, blended, or extended—are built on love and support. Blood relations aren't the only factor that defines a family; instead, it’s the bonds we choose to create and nurture that truly matter.

A Growing Need for Adoptive Families
Unfortunately, new data reveals a 22% increase in children waiting to be matched with adoptive families, and fewer adopters are coming forward. This leaves 780 more children in England waiting for a permanent home than there are approved adopters. Many children face delays of 18 months or more, highlighting the urgent need for more families to begin their adoption journey.

At Caritas Care, we understand that adoption is a lifelong commitment, and we're here to support every step of the way. Whether it's through our experienced social workers, foster carers, or birth family connections, you’ll have a community to rely on. You’re never alone in this journey.

The Journey: More Than Just Adoption
National Adoption Week’s theme, “The Journey,” is beautifully captured in a new short film featuring three adoptive families aboard a train. It reflects on the ups and downs of the adoption process, reminding us that every journey is different but filled with moments of love and growth. Rachel, one of the adoptive parents featured in the film, shares her thoughts: “You have an idea in your head of what family looks like, and for us it’s been different, but even more wonderful in so many ways."
This powerful message echoes what we believe at Caritas Care: each family’s experience is unique, and no two journeys are the same.

Join the Journey with Caritas Care
Now more than ever, we need people like you to consider adoption. With fewer potential adopters coming forward, largely due to the cost-of-living crisis, many children are waiting for their forever families. Train companies like Southeastern Railways, Hull Trains, and Avanti have stepped up to support National Adoption Week by offering free tickets to adoptive families and raising awareness of the cause across their networks.

If you're considering adoption, know that Caritas Care is here to guide you, offering preparation training, resources, and support through every stage of the process. National Adoption Week also highlights new 'Adopter Journey Standards,' which outline what you can expect from adoption agencies and social workers as you embark on your own journey.
