How many of us believe that, to be successful, we have to be brilliant at multitasking? We look at other people we deem to be super successful and think they got there because they are great at everything. But that’s not true. Most people have achieved their success by focussing on a specific goal. They are not good at everything but they delegate well and understand the power of working as a team.
Dividing our attention between multiple tasks does not increase efficiency, it decreases it, slows us down and means we are more likely to make mistakes. Research has shown that it takes an average of 25 minutes to recover from an interruption. How many of us feel overwhelmed and tell ourselves there is never enough time, resources or energy to get everything done? Ralph Marston says: ‘Don’t make excuses for why you can’t get it done. Focus on all the reasons why you must make it happen.’
Streamlining our focus will help us achieve our main goal. Imagine having many tabs open on your computer and trying to jump between them without clicking into the wrong tab or struggling to find the correct one. That’s what it’s like when we are trying to multitask. Changing our focus may mean making harsh decisions. According to John Carmack: ‘Focus is a matter of deciding what things you’re not going to do.’
We tackle this topic at our Business Owners Forum, on Thursday, 26th May, at 4.30 pm: ‘The Myth of Multitasking. What Is The True Cost?’. Join us at this free, 60-Minute online session, which will show you the effect of multitasking on the brain, and will give you some key points to take away that will help you to prioritise, focus, delegate and manage your to-do list, in order to optimise your performance.
The workshop will be facilitated by Alan Hyams, Consultant and Coach, who is an expert on time management.
