Poor mental wellbeing can contribute to higher absenteeism, lower productivity and lower profits, having bottom line consequences.

For example, the Canadian Employee and Family Assistance program, Morneau Shepell, indicates absences alone cost Canadian employers $28-million for every ten-thousand employees. And they cite poor mental wellbeing as leading the way in these absences.

Fortunately, companies can address these growing employee mental wellbeing issues.

An example of an organisation successfully addressing this issue is American Express, that has conducted a Company Health Risk Assessment and found that many of its employees suffered stress and other behavioural health issues, yet their Employee Assistance Program only had a utilisation rate of just 4%.

After taking action to make mental wellbeing a key priority, by outsourcing the issue to a leading psychologist, the mental health program utilisation has risen to 2.5 times the national average. American Express has also received numerous awards for its mental health programs, and their in house surveys show a 98% employee satisfaction rate for their Healthy Minds program.
