Increased Energy Prices and Boiler Efficiency

By

With the recently announced rise on the energy price cap, the average home's energy bill is set to increase by £693 a year from 1 April 2022.  With that in mind, it’s more crucial than ever to ensure your boiler is running efficiently.

According to a report by the Energy Saving Trust (published April 2020), heating and hot water makes up approximately 55% of a household's energy bills.

The Energy Saving Trust identified that by replacing an older inefficient boiler with a new A-rated model, you could be saving in the region of £340 a year. This is alongside an annual reduction of up to 1500kg of carbon monoxide.

Research has shown that older boilers may only reach 50% efficiency so will use more gas to heat your home than a new one would. New boilers can reach efficiencies of over 93% meaning they require 43% less energy to produce the same amount of heat. The harder a boiler has to work to provide your desired level of heating, the more gas is used.

So in theory, having a new boiler in place can not only save you a significant amount of money a year, it can also reduce your carbon footprint. What’s more, it will provide you with peace of mind that you have a reliable heating method in place all year round.

Boiler Service

If you’ve had a new boiler installed in recent years, or a new one isn’t a viable option due to finances, it’s even more important to remember your annual boiler service.

It can be tempting to put a boiler service off until your boiler becomes unreliable or worse, stops working. Bear in mind that without regular servicing your boiler will most likely be working a lot harder to produce the right amount of heat. This will use up more fuel and lead to higher energy bills.

Having your boiler serviced annually is the simplest way to increase its lifespan. It not only prevents any damage, but it also ensures that everything is running as it should be. If your boiler is under manufacturer's warranty, professional servicing will mean that your warranty remains valid.
