In this day and age, there are a number of different tools that offer advanced and insightful ways to communicate with employees within an organisation which forces us to question the role of intranet systems and how they fit into the equation in 2021. Are they a dusty relic or do intranet systems still provide a significant service to businesses looking for an effective way to engage with their staff? Read on as we bring you all the information you need to know about the relevance of intranet systems in the modern technological world…
The first thing we need to do is define what an intranet system is. Essentially, they are a private network that allows a business or organisation to coordinate effective communication throughout the workplace and have been the go-to internal communication tool for many decades. They were designed in tandem with the internet during the 1990’s, however they differ from the internet in many ways because the internet is a public network that isn’t owned by anybody whereas intranet systems are private and can be owned and accessed by solely those within an organisation.
Internal communication between employees within a workforce is at the forefront of digital design in the 21st century as we become more and more reliant on technology in order to build relationships and encourage employee productivity. With this said, an alternative piece of software has yet to be designed that would render an intranet system an old-fashioned method of communicating within an organisation. Until this occurs, it isn’t possible to say that intranets are irrelevant in the scope of modern technological advancements because so many businesses continue to rely on them.
As it stands, an intranet system can be used in a variety of different ways. For example, information and files can be stored with simplicity in a universal location where it can be easily accessed by every employee at any given time. An intranet system may also provide each employee with a ‘profile’ and allows them to communicate through the intranet which encourages collaboration and helps create workforce relationships without the pressure of professional formalities via email.
As a private network, it’s impossible to deny that an intranet system still provides an incredibly useful service to large organisations that have a number of employees scattered across different sites. By allowing all the information that could possibly be needed to be found on an intranet system, employees are able to get a lot more done which ultimately improves productivity and reduces unnecessary distractions. Here at OwlTree, we believe that intranet systems will remain relevant for the foreseeable future as simply too many organisations rely on them.
