A Brief Guide to Web and IT Jargon

By

When it comes to computer terminology, it can be easy to become overwhelmed by all the phrases that are used by the specialists. After all, the technology used inside a computer is highly sophisticated and technicians who converse with one another using industry jargon on a regular basis can sometimes forget to simplify their approach when they are talking to clients. Here at OwlTree, we are very conscious about making sure that a client is confident in their decision to work with us. That’s why we have put together this brief guide on some of the most common jargon terms used in the web development industry.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over a network and is measured in ‘bits per second’. The higher the bps, the faster data can be downloaded, sent, and received across a network.

Cache

A cache (pronounced “cash”) is a storage area that gives you access to information that you have used before. For example, a website tends to load faster when you visit it a second time because some of the data has been ‘cached’ and stored.

Cookies

It’s safe to say that every regular web user has heard of ‘cookies’ before and unfortunately, these aren’t the chocolate chip variety. In fact, they are actually small amounts of text hidden in websites that your internet browser stores to reidentify you the next time you visit the same website.

Malware

Short for ‘malicious software’, malware is a program or application that attempts to damage your computer in some way. In fact, they can be separated into a range of different categories including viruses, spyware, ghost-ware, trojans and worms.

RAM

The acronym RAM stands for ‘random access memory’, which determines how fast a computer can run different programs. It works as a temporary holding slot for data being used by running applications, like a pigeon-hole mailbox system in an office. The most RAM your machine has, the faster it can run different applications simultaneously.
