Darwen Heritage Centre -Holker House

In the heart of this town Holker House has become the home for Darwen Heritage Centre.A building dedicated to the prolific history of this cotton mill town steeped in stories and stunning architecture.Darwen was home to a strong cotton industry and boasts a visit from Gandhi in September 1931 to address concerns with cotton trading.Darwen home to Samuel Crompton, inventor of the spinning mule lived in Bury Fold Lane, Darwen. England Team footballer, Sam Wadsworth born 1896 English caps 1922-26 and lead singer of Blancmange, Neil Arthur to name a few!

The town is nestled in a valley overlooked by the Jubilee Tower, or Darwen Tower as it is more commonly known, from here you can see the coast and for miles around.  Families and visitors walk the moor to this famous landscape for the breath-taking views, wrap up warm its breezy!

Historical talks are held at the centre from a variety of speakers covering all aspects of the local heritage and points of interest. Please look at our website for our forthcoming programme of events.

Heritage Open Days annual weekend is run from the centre and brings together a full programme of events throughout the borough, churches, walks, open afternoons, talks, old fashioned bus rides and much more happens when the town springs to life to reflect on all its local heritage.

Changing Exhibitions are on display at the centre, usually following a programme of two per year.Research from our historians and volunteers, schools and residents brings together exhibitions showcasing on a variety of topics.If you have items or stories of interest which you would like to share you can be guaranteed a warm welcome in person, by email or social media.
