WALX Helvellyn Ullswater is delighted to announce our lead Guide & Navigation coach Nicky Sproson recently became certified to deliver Gold Level Advanced NNAS Certificates (National Navigation Award Scheme). Nicky headed to The Dark Peak area of Derbyshire for her assessment on unknown territory on Kinder Scout in November and was assessed on her ability to teach, demonstrate and indeed navigation on tricky terrain, through bogs, heather and tremendous peak hags... all good fun for a top navigator!
Based in the heart of the Lake District, on the shores of Ullswater, with mountains towering around us, and at the foot of the Helvellyn Range, we know the importance of navigation skills. Many folk approach us in our office in the car park in Glenridding to take on Helvellyn, voted Britain's favourite walk, some of whom are struggling to find their way out of the car park, and are aiming to 'just follow' others. We believe, alongside the mountain rescue teams throughout The Lakes, it is super important NOT to just follow a device or phone, but to understand how to keep yourself safe on the fells, understand weather forecasts, the importance of kit to take and wear and understand and decode your paper map, giving the bigger picture of where you are. Our NNAS courses start right at the very beginning of your Navigation journey:
Bronze - Absolutely beginners certificate and suitable for all those wanting to start out on the fells on trails.
Silver - take a step further into the unknown and a little off trail, in poor visibility and hours of darkness as you come off the fells.
Gold - An advanced navigation certificate for those aiming to take themselves totally off course and go exploring!
If you are interested in any of our 2 day certificates or would like to chat about what level is suitable for you and/or your colleagues, we have dates set for Winter/Autumn 2022, just get in touch.
